Switch Modes in a Crisis and Your Team Thinks You're Panicking

Transcript

Servant leader, transformational leader, benevolent dictator… whichever label you reach for when someone asks about your leadership style, my perspective is that the distinction is becoming increasingly meaningless.

Organizations are moving faster than ever. Teams are smaller, more varied in what they're hired to do, and covering broader ground than they used to. Under those conditions your team doesn't need you to be one type of leader. They need you to be the right leader for the situation in front of them, which changes week to week and sometimes hour to hour. A crisis calls for something directive. Someone struggling calls for coaching. A decision that needs real buy-in across a group calls for facilitation and patience. So the useful question stopped being what's your style, and became what does this team need from me right now.

The part that gets missed is that your range has to be visible before the high-stakes moment arrives. If your team has only ever seen you relaxed and hands-off, and then one bad Tuesday you switch into take-charge mode, it's jarring. They don't recognize you. They can't tell whether they're seeing something authentic or watching you panic, and they lose time deciding which. So build the versatility on purpose. Develop your ability to sense what the situation actually is. Signal which mode you're operating in so people know what to expect from you. Practice the modes you use least in low-stakes moments, so the range earns trust before anything depends on it. And hold psychological safety as the constant underneath all of it, no matter which mode you're in, because trust is the thing that makes any of the rest legible. Being a rock for your team never meant being the same leader every day… it meant being a leader they can read on the day it counts.
