Your Manager Thinks About Your Work 5% of the Time
Transcript
Most people get maybe thirty minutes a week with their boss, so they do the natural thing and try to cram everything into it. That instinct is the whole problem.
Managing up usually gets taught as communication and alignment, which is true as far as it goes and misses the larger opportunity. Your manager is the highest-leverage partner you have, and leverage runs in both directions… they get more done because of you, and you get more done because of them. Most people only ever work the second half of that trade. Working the first half starts with understanding what keeps them up at night: the metrics they're judged on, the battles they're fighting a level or two above you, the pressure landing on them that will eventually land on you. Then learn their language. Every leader has a particular way of talking about value and success, and framing your work in that language is what makes it register instead of just getting acknowledged.
Do that, and you can find the place where your goals, their priorities, and the company's needs overlap. You need all three to locate the intersection, and that intersection is where a reporting relationship turns into an actual partnership. Then there's the attention math nobody says out loud. You think about your work about 90% of the time. Your manager thinks about it maybe 5%. Spending those premium minutes on a status update means burning the scarcest thing you have on information that could have been an email or a Slack message. Send the detail ahead of time, more often than you think you need to, and spend the live time on what only works live… listening, reacting, asking the question you don't have the answer to. Status updates inform. Curiosity influences.
