AI Follows Any Process Perfectly. Choosing One Is Your Job.

Nobody can tell you where this lands in six months, let alone two years, and people keep asking how to prepare anyway. My honest answer is that whatever your function, the role gets more strategic… because AI keeps absorbing the parts that were never the strategic part. The job doesn't disappear. It moves up a level.

Three shifts are worth practicing now. The first runs from doing work to directing it, which means supplying context and judgment: which problem gets solved first, why that one, and what the business actually needs out of it. A model won't infer any of that on its own. The second runs from individual tasks to orchestration. As agents get more capable, you end up running a portfolio of them alongside human collaborators and hybrid workflows, and success starts to mean knowing where a human adds real value versus where you let the thing run. That applies to individual contributors too, not just managers. The third runs from following processes to making judgment calls on the fly. AI will execute any process perfectly. Someone still has to decide which process, what to prioritize, what to stop entirely, and when to override the recommendation sitting on the screen.

The people who struggle will be the ones who hand their thinking to the system and stop checking it. So start practicing before you need to. What context do I have that nobody else has, and how much of it am I actually passing along? What judgment calls did I make today, and could I defend any of them? What's happening around me that I've stopped paying attention to? What tools are sitting right there unused, and how would I combine them to make a bigger dent this week than last week? None of these jobs are becoming obsolete. More responsibility is landing on them than before, and the tools to carry it are already in front of us.
