The promotion happened. The role description didn't.

Transcript

Your manager keeps telling you to think bigger and be more strategic, and nobody has actually explained what changed. Staff, principal, whatever your company calls it… the role shifted underneath you in ways that rarely get spelled out.

The difference between senior and staff isn't more responsibility. The impact itself changes shape, and not everyone makes that transition successfully. Everything you were already doing stays: mentoring people, taking on the bigger pieces of work, operating autonomously. None of that is the new part. The new part is that your leverage now runs across the organization instead of inside your team. You're expected to solve problems that scale past your own group, build relationships across the company, and make other people more effective through the work you do. Which means learning the organization itself becomes part of the job… how it actually functions, who runs what, and what those people are being measured on. The question moves from how do I solve this for my team to how do I solve it in a way that holds up across the whole company.

The part that surprises people most is how much of the job is talking. Negotiating ideas, communicating them repeatedly, compromising, earning buy-in across boundaries where you have no authority at all. That's not overhead getting in the way of the real work. The impact expected at this level is bigger than anything one person can build alone, so you have to bring others with you, and the solutions have to be ones that other teams will adopt, implement, and build on after you've moved to the next thing. You're still executing. You're still shipping work that moves the business. Nobody hands you a revised job description on the day this changes… the work just starts arriving at a size that one person can't finish alone.
